Hi, Mother of recently diagnosed 6 year old boy

Hello, I'm the mother of two boys, ages 6 and 2.  Our 6 year old has been in OT for 18 months and has had a few spurts of ST in his years.  His OT recommended an APD eval over the holidays and we were able to have one done during spring break in April.  He was diagnosed with generalized APD with issues in Integration, Decoding, and Tolerance Fading Memory.  He is moving forward to 1st grade but struggled this year.  We have him enrolled in Fast ForWord this summer from 7/6-8/16.  He also has had major allergy issues since birth, Eosinophilic Esophagitis, and has an essential tremor.

Re: Hi, Mother of recently diagnosed 6 year old boy

Sounds like you have been through the diagnosis train, and it's great you have got this diagnosis early. My son was diagnosed at 6-1/2, and until then all kinds of labels were thrown around. Nobody knew what was going on, but once we got the label, everything made sense. Our son is doing Fast ForWord this summer too. I have seen him better able to pay attention, but I'm not sure how much it's effected is APD.

Since your son has had a lot of allergy issues, it's very possible the listening therapies will help him. Our son did AIT with tremendous results. He did therapeutic listening, which has an OT component, but he did not see the same results as AIT. Most schools don't do listening therapies, but from what I have read about them, they are really help to accelerate the process!

Welcome to the group!
