Selecting a qualified therapistWhat certifications or accreditations would we look for when choosing a qualified Speech & Language Pathologist for CAPD therapy? If there is no underlying hearing issue or spoken word problem, would we have any need to consult with an audiologist? There doesn't seem to be much of a CAPD community in our area, but we need to narrow the providers down with some sort of criteria. Any suggestions? Thanks - Laurie |

Re: Selecting a qualified therapist Our son has been doing speech for years, and I have not seen or read much about speech therapists doing specific therapy for CAPD kids. The one thing I did read was that some therapists will turn on a radio or other competing noise to help exercise the auditory system while giving the therapy. In our son's case, his speech is mostly getting him to talk. He is slow to process what he hears, so his responses to questions are often slow or absent. He also has missed so much social information that he is awkward socially, so some of his sessions are done in groups and teach the pragmatics.

Re: Selecting a qualified therapist When I look for a speech language pathologist to work with our son on this, I want him/her to be experienced in working with CAPD. If they aren't, I'd rather move on and find someone else who is. I've had enough of these idiots who just because they have a Masters, they think they know everything. If a University Of Kentucky department head in speech language pathology couldn't recognize CAPD when it was right in front of him, why should I waste my time with someone who is so inept? From now on, if a professional has never worked with this condition, our son won't be seeing them. Ask questions, pointed questions, and don't take anyone's BS!

Re: Selecting a qualified therapistDiana, have you found a speech therapist with experience with CAPD? I haven't met one. We had our son assessed by a learning disabilities specialist who was also a speech therapist, and even she said she had little exposure. How amazing that would be to have a speech therapist who could provide therapy in the context of the CAPD. I'm going to talk to his school speech therapist and see what she knows... |

Re: Selecting a qualified therapist A speech language pathologist is the type of person I've seen. Some of them have clinics where they have multiple "therapists" who work on certain therapies or disorders. I don't know what's in your area, I think you'd probably have to peruse the yellow pages and just start looking for speech language pathologists. But be sure to ask if they have experience with Auditory Processing Disorder.
