Should we have a book area?

smile

I was on another website, http://www.apduk.org/ and they have an area for books.  Has anyone on the site read any CAPD related books, and if so, what did they teach you?  I just ordered "When the Brain Can't Hear, Unraveling the Mystery of Auditory Processing Disorder".  I expect it to be here by Wednesday this week.  I think it would be great for us to have an area in this site like that.  I am anxious to get this, and read more about what my baby is dealing with.

Re: Should we have a book area?

Hi Diana,
A book area is an excellent idea.

I have read Like Water Through Sound, which is written in novel form and is about a mom who went through quite a journey to figure out that your son had APD. Her story was so identical to ours it was spooky. It just validated all that I had known intuitively.

I have read pieces of When the Brain Can't Hear, but have not sat down to read the whole thing. I definitely should.

The Mislabeled Child is an excellent book. It's about all learning disabilities, and includes information on how one disability might look like another (i.e. CAPD looks like ADHD). They talk about testing procedures as well as therapies. It's written by two neuroscientists who do a lot of dyslexia research, but they theorize that auditory processing issues are no the dyslexia spectrum. Apparently they effect the sames regions of the brain.

I've read portions of Google books that relate to the subject, but I don't remember the names of them. I should look into reading books because maybe they will offer some new insights. I just wish there was a book that talks about remediation. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of research on effective methods for overcoming or compensating for CAPD.

Thanks for the idea!

Re: Should we have a book area?

No problem Bonnie, I'm looking forward to getting that book I ordered.  It should be here by the middle of this week.  I'll definitely have to look into the "Like Water Through Sound" book you were talking about.

On that UK site I was talking about, there are published papers written about CAPD and the possible links to other learning disabilities.  Have you ever been to that site?  It's a bit strange to navigate, otherwise, it has valuable information for people like us.

Re: Should we have a book area?

BTW Dolfrog, are you going to post on the introduction site?  I'm sure the members of this site would love to know more about the work you do.  I know you from your facebook page about APD, you might want to tell everyone about that too.
