My son has APD and started struggling in 4th grade

Topic moved by administrator to Introduce Yourself! forum:

My son has APD and started struggling in 4th grade.  He went undiagnosed until last year, his sophmore year in high school.  The schools do not know enough about APD to help him and he really wants to stay at his school but the environment is not healthy for him.  He suffers from low self esteem.

He is in two classes that are slow moving and that is perfect for him but his classes that are mainstream and go fast are really challenging.  He has an awesome tutor who understands him perfectly but she can't be with him everyday in every class.

Can anyone help us with ideas on how to fit in with APD in a very large suburban High School?

Thank you!
Shannon Anderson

Re: My son has APD and started struggling in 4th grade

Shannon, welcome to the board! So sorry to hear your son is struggling so much. Have you thought about getting counseling for your son? Perhaps the school would provide as a support? I've read stories from adults with CAPD how it made them feel so insecure because they were unsure of what they were or weren't hearing, and asking what continuously makes them look "stupid." So perhaps a third party talking to your son, one who could understand the feelings of isolation, might be helpful.

Also, does your son use an FM system in school, or maybe some sort of ear amplifier? There are ear amplifier's I've seen that look like cell phone headsets. Perhaps something like this will make it easier to hear in the classes that go too fast.

Finally, the auditory system is not fully developed until 21-22 years of age, so he might consider trying some of the therapies that have helped others. Enlisten might be a good choice since it's a listening therapy that can be done at home. I know somebody who administers Enlisten, and he has found it extremely helpful for APD. Our son has done AIT, which helped a lot, but around November we're also going to do Enlisten.

Hope this helps,
Bonnie
