Has anyone read the Wikipedia entry for this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auditory_p … g_disorder

What caught my eye was the last sentence of the Secondary Characteristics section...

"APD may be related to cluttering,[18] a fluency disorder marked by word and phrase repetitions."

My son was diagnosed with that back in first grade, and was only treated for the speech issues.

Re: Has anyone read the Wikipedia entry for this?

I have read the Wikipedia entry. Seems fairly good. I hadn't notice that point because my son does not have that issue. What I do know is that our son was in special education for 3 years, and nobody there once mentioned that auditory processing might be the issue. Truthfully, I think very few educators know about it, let alone really understand it. It's not their fault. It's just not something that is taught. I believe it's becoming more known as it is realized that most autistic children have auditory processing issues. As the rate of autism rises, the coinciding issues are gaining awareness.

A couple weeks ago I ran into 2 of the aides that worked in our son's special ed class. I told them about his diagnosis, and they both were all ears as I explained about it. They said they had heard about CAPD, but didn't know a lot about it, but with what they did know they said they felt I'd hit the nail on the head. So while they were with him every day of school for 2 years they never mentioned it, but once identified they both thought it was an accurate diagnosis. These are two women who have been special ed aides for 10+ years, and one is becoming a speech therapist. I told them about this site, and they were excited because they said there was another boy in their class whom they believed had CAPD. Informing the schools seems critical.

I'm sorry it took so long to figure it out for your son, but how wonderful that you picked it up now. I have read the auditory system continues to develop until 19-20 years, so there is still time to engage in the therapies that will help him.

Take care,
Bonnie

Re: Has anyone read the Wikipedia entry for this?

Whatever helps him is what we need to do.  He's only got one shot at his grade school education, and I don't want him to end up hating learning because he's got this issue.  Your education follows you all your life, it determines the job you get and the pay you earn.  I've been telling my husband that whatever we need to do to help him learn, we need to do NOW.  I hope I can keep him in the public school system and have him make friends there,  but if I have to homeschool him to meet his auditory needs, I will.

Re: Has anyone read the Wikipedia entry for this?

The Wikipedia APD article needs to be revised, to be more inline with current research.
Any volunteers to edit the article, I can help by providing the research and information etc.

best wishes

I don't know anything about Wikipedia editing, or I'd gladly volunteer to do it.

Hi Diana

Editing Wikipedia Articles can not be too difficult if I can do it lol
If you want to do some editing the first thing to do is to register and get your own USER page which no one really uses but the attached talk page can be useful. My wikipedia user page is at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dolfrog  try not to be be like me and "want to change the world yesterday"
Articles like the Auditory Processing Disorder http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auditory_p … _disorder, in theory the content should be supported by research paper references preferably review research papers which is not always possible multiple sources are then required.
I edited this article way back in 2004 / 2005
Doing the research helps gain a better understanding of the subject lol
the best research sources for Wikipedia are research papers from the Online PubMed library
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez/ (currently modifying their site with a few enforced changes while sorting out the bugs)

And just to help you on your way here is my PubMed collection of APD research papers http://delicious.com/dolfrog/RPC+audt+listening, AudiologyOnline articles http://delicious.com/dolfrog/audt+AudiologyOnline and information from ASHA http://delicious.com/dolfrog/audt+asha

And while I remember I also have a Cluttering / Stuttering collection http://delicious.com/dolfrog/RPC+Stuttering the topic came up in one of the Facebook groups

best wishes
