Auditory Training Therapies

There are several auditory training therapies that have been shown to be effective in helping CAPD. Some of these therapies can be done at home, some require going to a center where they administer and oversee the program. In order to be effective, these therapies generally require a dedicated amount of time each day for a specific number of weeks.

The chart below gives a brief description of some of the more popular auditory training therapies.

If you know of others, please contact the CAPDsupport administrator to have them added.

Goo Games

DURATION:Varies. Get recommendations from audiologist as to duration and frequency.

RESEARCH: None available.

Goo Games were developed by Earobics, a provider or language and literacy software. Goo Games is a free, online series of games that help children develop early language and reading skills. These games are beneficial as an early introduction to computer-assisted-therapies. For children with CAPD, it gives them a fun way to get comfortable with the computer as they begin to exercise their auditory capabilities. Goo Games website

Earobics

DURATION:Varies. Can be done at home.

RESEARCH: Research has been done, but it's been geared towards reading assistance, not CAPD.

Earobics is a multi-sensory reading intervention program that assists children in recognizing phonics, listening, short-term memory and auditory discrimination. It was created by the same company who created the Houghton Mifflin program, a learning-to-read program used in schools across the U.S. Earobics software tracks the progress of the students and automatically adjusts to accommodate the student's skill level. There are two levels in the at-home version of Earobics. Earobics Step 1 is for preK to 2nd grade. Earobics Step 2 is for 2nd to 5th grade. Earobics can be purchased online through educational software distributors.

Fast ForWord

DURATION: 6 weeks, 1-1/2 hours per day, 5 days per week. Can be done at home or in a providers' office.

RESEARCH: Research has been done to show the efficacy of Fast ForWord, but it is difficult to determine if the research shows effectiveness for CAPD.

Fast ForWord is a family of educational software products created by Scientific Learning. It is intended to enhance cognitive skills of children, especially focused on developing "phonological awareness" (discussed below). It is marketed as a therapy for strengthening the skills of memory, attention, processing rate, and sequencing for children. It evolved from studies that showed children with abnormal temporal processing and language learning impairment could have their phonological awareness improved in parallel with their temporal processing.
